Comodo AV Scanner – Help

Comodo AV Scanner is a free service that lets you quickly find out whether your computer is infected with viruses, spyware and other threats on your computer.

Downloading the application

After agreeing to the license agreement and clicking 'Start Free Virus Scan', Comodo AV Scanner will open up in a pop up window.

The scanner requires the download of a small ActiveX control to scan your computer. To install and run the scanner, you must have ActiveX enabled in IE 6 or 7 and should click 'Yes' any security dialog boxes. This is a one time installation and takes around 3-4 minutes depending on your Internet connection speed. On subsequent visits to the scanning page you will be able to run scans immediately.

Running a malware scan

By default, Comodo AV Scanner is set to scan the entire contents of all detected Logical Hard Drives present on your machine. You can, however, manually select which specific drives or folders to scan using the drop down menu. You can choose to scan Individual files rather than an entire drive or folder by selecting the 'Individual File' radio button

To select which drive/directory/file to scan for threats:

• First, choose whether you want to scan a location or a file by selecting the appropriate radio button.
  
  Location – this allows you to select entire hard drives; individual partitions of a hard drive, removable drives or specific folders
  
  Individual File – As the name suggests, allows you to browse to a particular file to scan
  
  

• Logical Hard Drives (for example, C:; D:; E:;) - Default option to perform a deep scan for malware on the entire contents of detected hard drives and partitions.
  
  Note: The larger the hard drive and the more files you have, the longer the scan will take.
• My Documents/My Pictures - option to scan only the files in your My Documents or My Pictures folders.
• Browse – option to select file to scan.

  Checking the 'Scan archives' box enables Comodo AV Scanner to reveal hidden threats within .zip and other compressed files.

• Once you have decided which drives, files or folders you wish to check, click 'Start' to launch the scanning process.

Scan Results

A scan result summary is displayed immediately under the scan results

Files scanned – total number of files checked by the last completed scan

Threats – number of threats discovered by the last completed scan

Start time/ Duration – stat time and duration of the scan.

The names of any viruses or malicious files detected during the scan will appear in the 'Scan Results' pane.

What Do I Do if a Threat Is Detected?

Comodo AV Scanner detects and lists any threats that are present on your system but is not capable of eliminating those threats from your system. If threats are detected you should take steps to remove them immediately.

Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer

Comodo uses ActiveX controls and cookies to deliver applications via the Internet. These enabling technologies require specific browser configurations to ensure the applications are installed and work properly on your computer. Please follow the directions below to configure your browser.

• 1.Determine which version of Internet Explorer you are using.
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • On the Help menu, click 'About Internet Explorer' to open the About Internet Explorer dialog box.
  • The IE version number is listed as shown below
  
  

• If you use version of IE lower than 6.x, you should update it to 6.x or 7.x version. (Note: To upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, visit the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/.)

Now you need to enable ActiveX components in IE. In order to do it:

• Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options to open the Internet Options dialog box.
• Click the Security tab. Make sure that you are in the Internet Web content zone and that the security level for this zone is set to Medium (the default setting) or Low.
  Note: Medium-High or Medium for IE 7.
• If you are not sure whether your security options are correct, click Default Level to set the zone to Medium (recommended).
• If you are an advanced user who wants to customize your security settings, click Custom Level to open the Security Settings dialog box. Comodo AV Scanner requires that the following options must be enabled

• Select Enable for these ActiveX controls and plug-ins options:
• Download signed ActiveX controls
• Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins
• Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting

• Select Prompt for these ActiveX controls and plug-ins options:
  • Download unsigned ActiveX controls
  • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe
• I.Select Enable for the Active scripting option under the Scripting settings.

After you configure Internet Explorer, it will have the correct security settings to run Comodo AV Scanner.

About ActiveX Controls

ActiveX controls are software modules based on Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM) architecture. They add functionality to software applications by seamlessly incorporating pre-made modules with the basic software package. Modules can be interchanged but still appear as parts of the original software.

On the Internet, ActiveX controls can be linked to Web pages and downloaded by an ActiveX-compliant browser. ActiveX controls turn Web pages into software pages that perform like any other program launched from a server.

Comodo AV Scanner uses ActiveX controls in its applications, and you must download the specific ActiveX components required for each application. Once these components are loaded, you do not need to download them again unless upgrades or updates become available.

Note: You must have Administrator rights to install/uninstall software on Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 operating system
